Moments of Meditation By Rev. Denver Jones Psalm 12:1, "Help, Lord!" The occasion for this brief prayer of the Psalmist was over his concern that those who professed to be godly had little, if any, impact on the society of that day. They were as salt which had lost its flavor — having the appearance of religion, but without the reality in terms of conduct — failing to be a restraint in the midst of prevailing evil, denying their families and neighbors the taste, as it were, of genuine faith and the blessed results from obedience to His Word which alone can fill the God-shaped vacuum in the soul. David’s request for divine assistance was that he might exert himself in the cause of Truth, and so help fill up what was lacking. Help from the Lord is given for the purpose of enabling us to walk worthily and to represent the true and living God we profess to love and serve. Faith as a mere mental assent to Truth, without a heartfelt obedience, is destitute of power. In Matthew 5:13 Jesus said we are the salt of the earth. As salt has a preserving effect on food, and also adds flavor and relish to what we eat, so our lives and conduct should serve as a restraint in the midst of the evils of our time, and in a positive way influence others to taste and see that the Lord is good! Charles Lindbergh wrote the following on Truth: "In my youth, science was more important to me than either man or God. I worshiped science. Its advance had surpassed man’s wildest dreams. It took many years for me to discover that science, with all its brilliance, lights only a middle chapter of creation. "I saw the aircraft I love destroying the civilization I expected it to save. Now I understand that spiritual truth is more essential to a nation than the mortar in its cities’ walls. For when the actions of a people are undergirded by spiritual truths, there is safety. When spiritual truths are rejected, it is only a matter of time before civilization will collapse. "We must understand spiritual truths and apply them to our modern life. We must draw strength from the almost forgotten virtues of simplicity, humility, contemplation and prayer. It requires a dedication beyond science, beyond self, but the rewards are great and it is our only hope." It is Truth that sets us free!!
